2015 Nissan Murano Review, Ratings, Specs, Prices, and Photos ...

Posted: 14 Apr 2014 06:30 AM PDT

The all-new 2015 Nissan Murano isn't intended, first and foremost, to be a family vehicle. Instead, the Murano is a stylish and comfortable five-seat crossover utility vehicle meant to appeal to couples and empty-nesters seeking a vehicle they can use for active daily lives and trips. For family duties, Nissan offers instead the compact Rogue and the mid-size Pathfinder, each of them with optional or standard third-row seating. The new Murano comes in only a single body style, remaining a five-door mid-size crossover; Nissan has said nothing about replacing the current Murano CrossCabriolet two-door convertible utility with a version based on the all-new vehicle.

The design of the new third-generation 2015 Murano, according to Nissan execs, is to build on the striking looks of the first-generation Murano (sold from 2003 through 2008) while retaining the much-improved interior of the version that's replaced by this one. Previewed last year by the Nissan Resonance concept vehicle, it has retained much of that concept's striking looks. At the front, the grille and air intake continue the Nissan "V-Motion" frontal design, with accent lines in the hood sweeping down to a V-shaped center form outlined in chrome.

Both the front running lights and taillights are boomerang-shaped, using LEDs for a distinctive nighttime appearance. LED headlights are also available as an option. The new Murano's hood wraps over the tops of the front fenders, which initiate deeply sculptured and angled body-side lines that sweep the length of the vehicle. A complex rocker-panel-and sill accent piece that starts at the bottoms of the doors includes not only contrasting plastic but also a sort of chrome swoosh. The roofline "floats" over a very small, upswept third side window in the pillar, and the tailgate is sharply raked, with a long trailing roof spoiler at its top under which a horizontal LED third brake light illuminates.

Overall, the Murano's lines are successful at emphasizing the horizontal and drawing the eye away from the height of what is, in reality, a tall crossover utility with substantial ground clearance.

Inside, the 2015 Murano has been designed to emphasize comfort and luxury--no grim, all-black hard plastics can be found--and evoke what Nissan calls an "upscale social lounge." Several two-tone color schemes are offered, including a variety of lighter tones beyond the standard charcoal and beige, and the company's interior designers have accented the dashboard, console, and doors with matte silver, chrome, and some interesting alternatives to the usual mock-wood trim. A long, low console extends past the front seats to offer rear passengers a mobile-phone storage compartment and an optional USB port for charging that phone.

The instrument panel height has been reduced, to open the cabin, and a 7-inch color display in the center is standard, with an 8-inch display optional. Nissan says it has reduced the number of controls for audio and navigation from 25 to 10 for simplicity, reasoning that drivers will come to know the combinations and command sequences they use most often, just as they do now on their mobile phones.

At launch, the 2015 Nissan Murano will be powered by a 260-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine developing 240 lb-ft of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). This is essentially the same powertrain offered in the larger Pathfinder crossover, and as with that vehicle, the Murano comes standard with front-wheel drive and offers all-wheel drive as an option. Nissan executives have said that they intend to offer a Murano Hybrid in the future; that vehicle will use a supercharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a mild-hybrid system intended to assist the engine, though it offers no all-electric running. Fuel economy for the Murano with the V-6 is expected to be about 20 percent higher than the vehicle it replaces, which would bring it to roughly 24 mpg combined.

The seats are a new design developed by the company's seating research lab, which says they were inspired by NASA research into zero-gravity living. The rear seats use three cushions rather than two for added comfort. An available power panoramic moonroof is 40 percent longer and 30 percent larger than the previous generation's version. Nissan says it is one of the largest available on any vehicle.

Despite the raked tailgate, Nissan says the cargo area will be among the largest in its segment--and that it can accommodate four large suitcases with the rear seat up. The rear seat backs fold flat, and the controls to do so can be reached from the rear; a power rear seat-back is available to eliminate the need to raise the seat back by hand.

Safety ratings for the new 2015 Murano won't be out for some time yet, but Nissan has fitted the crossover with its full suite of standard and optional safety features, using data from as many as three separate radar systems and four cameras. Available safety systems include adaptive cruise control, Blind-Spot Warning, Predictive Forward-Collision Warning, and Forward Emergency Braking.

The Murano also has a new feature, Cross-Traffic Alert, which detects a vehicle approaching from either side when the driver is backing out. It supplements the Moving Object Detection function within the Around-View Monitor, which alerts the driver to moving objects--from rolling shopping carts to small children--with a warning chime and a message on the rear-view camera screen when the car is put into reverse.

The 2015 Murano is available in S. SV, SL, and Platinum trim levels, all four offered with front-wheel drive standard and all-wheel drive as an option. Dual-zone climate control is standard, as is an intelligent key system with pushbutton ignition. A long list of optional features includes leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, remote engine-starting, and heated front and rear seats and cooled front seats. Memory for the driver's seat, steering-wheel, and mirror positions is also available.

On the infotainment front, the NissanConnect infotainment and connectivity system, incorporating both navigation and mobile apps, and a premium Bose AM-FM-CD audio system with 11 speakers, HD Radio, and SiriusXM satellite radio.

No pricing information or detailed feature specifications are available yet for the new third-generation 2015 Nissan Murano. It will arrive in U.S. showrooms in "late 2014," the company says. It will also be the first Murano to be built in North America, in the company's assembly plant in Canton, Mississippi, which makes a number of different utility vehicles and trucks.

2015 Dodge Charger Review, Ratings, Specs, Prices, and Photos ...

Posted: 16 Apr 2014 08:30 PM PDT

The 2015 Dodge Charger retains its name and basic body shape, but you might never know it from the striking redesign that makes up the bulk of the second updating of a car first launched for 2005. The new Charger has a completely revised front end that changes its looks to make it look lower, sleeker, and far more modern than the bluff-fronted muscle sedan it's been to date. Add in an updated interior, revised powertrains, and new safety equipment, and the big rear-wheel-drive family sedan may find a whole new set of fans as it enters its second decade.

The exterior redesign touched every body panel except the roof and the rear doors. Basically, the stylists and body engineers "took a chainsaw to all four corners of the car" to reduce the visual bulk of its square-cut front and rear, according to Dodge's design team. The result is a 2015 Charger that's the same length as before, but looks 8 to 10 inches more compact--more like a mid-size car with significant presence than the full-size sedan it actually is.The front is lower, with an almost BMW-like bevel at the front edge of the redesigned hood, and the slimmer blacked-out Dodge crosshair grille is bracketed by projector headlights outlined with distinctive C-shaped LED daytime running lights. Separate LED light units are built into a revised front bumper, and the center of the bumper bar is blacked out on R/T models, just as it is on higher-performance models of the smaller Dodge Dart.

The side profile, including a Coke-bottle rear fender swell, a high beltline, and hard-edged roof pillars, has remained the same, but now the rear is smoother and less angular, with more wraparound to the rear lights. The "LED racetrack" outlining the rear lights is retained, but Dodge has cut the number of LEDs by more than half using light pipes to give a continuous red outline to the tail panel. The rear bumper is moother and exhaust inlets are now integrated into the lower panel. On the trunk lid, the raised spoiler has been replaced by a smaller lip spoiler that provides the same downforce in a cleaner, more integrated look.

Overall, the 2015 Charger retains its commanding shape, but in a smoother and more refined way. It looks like a car that will slip powerfully through the air rather than batter it aside through brute force. The retro detailing has given way to a more integrated appearance tying it to the rest of the modern Dodge family, making it less flamboyant--but still both practical and capable of muscle-car behavior.

Inside, you pay for pay for that high beltline with outward visibility that's more limited than in other sedans. Still, the upright styling is unchanged--despite the sleeker front and rear ends--and it gives plenty of headroom all around. The wide front seats are well bolstered, and the big doors make getting in and out easy. The rear-seat legroom is a little tight for long-legged tall people, but complainers can be silenced by reminding them that it meets police-car standards. Dodge has added a 7-inch thin-film TFT screen to the center of the instrument cluster, while the center stack includes a touchscreen up to 8.4-inches across, used for 3-D navigation and downloadable apps.

For 2015, all Chargers are now offered with the eight-speed automatic transmission formerly confined to the more powerful V-8 models. The base engine for the SE model is a 292-horsepower Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 producing 260 lb-tt of torque, and it's the fuel economy champ. EPA ratings won't come for several months, but Dodge promises 31 mpg on the highway test cycle. The more powerful SXT model with the Rallye Appearance Group (made up of a cold-air intake, some engine-control software tweaks, and a new exhaust system) boosts those numbers to 300 hp and 264 lb-ft. Either V-6 model comes standard with rear-wheel drive, and all-wheel drive is optional. Then there's the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8, rated at 370 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque, only offered in rear-wheel drive form. Details on the higher-performance 2015 Charger SRT with an even more powerful 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 will be released at a later date.

The Dodge Charger handles well for a big sedan, with little body roll in any of its versions. The 2015 version uses electric power steering fitted as standard with three different feedback modes: Normal, Comfort, and Speed. The suspension has been retuned, with cast aluminum axles lighter than the steel ones they replace, and a sport mode that makes throttle mapping more aggressive and speeds shifting, cutting gear change time from 400 milliseconds to just 250.

Previous models of the Charger earned the highest five-star overall score in NHTSA safety testing, and it's been an IIHS Top Safety Pick in years past. A rearview camera system, active cruise control, and blind-spot monitors are available in addition to all the expected standard items.

Even the base Charger SE trim level includes power windows, locks, and mirrors; air conditioning; cruise control; pushbutton start; a power driver's seat; and an AM/FM/CD audio system with touchscreen control. The SXT level adds a number of additional features, and for 2015, six new 20-inch alloy wheel designs are available, including a 20x9 inch forged aluminium wheel option. Dodge has also upgraded the paint colors, adding a set of 'heritage' color options, including B5 Blue and TorRed. The revised Charger also adds several new technical features, including the latest version of Uconnect services, which incorporate 9-1-1 and assist call, roadside assistance calling options, theft alert, voice texting and a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Production of the 2015 Dodge Charger is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2014, with deliveries soon after.

Following up on the sketch released on Molly Saleen's Facebook page come more pictures and details about the upcoming Saleen Tesla Model S. This is the first attempt by Saleen add their own flair to an electric vehicle, and these latest pictures fill in the details. Carbon ceramic brakes and a carbon fiber rear diffuser are just of the few new features Saleen plans to add to the Model S, but still no word on performance.

As deduced from an earlier sketch, the Saleen Model S gets a new "aero management" package designed to improve airflow around the EV. This is an indirect way of improving both effieicny and performance without having to delve into the electric drivetrain. Carbon ceramic brake pads are generally reserved for trackday use, as they can stand excessive heat during prolonged races better.

Throw in some signature Saleen wheels, carbon fiber decklid trim, and a special Orange County Orange paintjob, and you've got an even faster-looking electric luxury sedan. The thesis for this project is a four-door futuristic supercar, and while the interior remains mostly untouched, the Saleen symbol is emblazoned on all four headrests as Saleen is want to do.

Beyond that though, Saleen is remaining mum on any performance enhancements. As I suggested yesterday, grippier tires could improve handling and acceleration. Combined with better aerodynamics, perhaps Saleen Model S can get its 0 to 60 MPH time down to just 3.5 seconds, faster even than the Tesla Roadster. There's only so much faster you can go from there, though the Roadster successor is said to push the envelope on performance.

Seems like Tesla is disrupting the aftermarket auto industry too, and it's good to have a guy like Steve Saleen on the right side of history. Because at the end of the day, a cool, fast car is still a cool, fast car, and having Saleen modifying the Model S might give some doubters second thoughts.

Saleen is a guy who's been around cars for a long time, and if he thinks there's something to the Tesla Model S, then it must be something special.
