Back behind the wheel! Amanda Bynes was spotted driving with her parents Rick and Lynn in Westlake Village, Calif. on Saturday, April 26.

PHOTOS: Amanda's transformation

As previously reported, the on-the-mend star, 28, was placed on three years of probation in February 2013 in exchange for the court dropping her DUI charge. The former child star was also ordered to attend an alcohol education course and pay a fine.

PHOTOS: Stars who've battled mental illness

Bynes received a DUI following an April 2012 car crash where she allegedly sideswiped a police car in West Hollywood. At the time, the case was delayed to give the Easy A actress time to complete a stint in rehab for mental illness back in September.

Since leaving rehab last winter, Bynes appears to be turning her life around, spending lots of time with her parents and taking classes at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

On March 1, she tweeted for the first time post-rehab, writing, "Hi everyone! I'm busy studying at @FIDM but I want to say I love you to my fans! Xoxo Amanda."

These have to qualify as some of the coolest car photographs we've ever seen. Yes, we've seen some amazing composites and some real live racing photos that are quite epic in their own right, but these images by photographers Dmitry Chistoprudov and Nikolay Rykov have the entire Internet wide-eyed.

First important note is that the photos aren't faked, and we have the behind the scenes photos to prove it. Christoprudov and Rykov actually wanted to illuminate a car from below 1 meter (3.28 feet) of solid lake ice — you know… weekend project — and so they set about doing just that.

In the end they succeeded, as the photographs above and below go to show, but not before encountering all sorts of challenges.

ice1

The first problem they had was getting a waterproof light source that would be strong enough. By Rykov's estimation, they needed something that could shine around 1000Lm, and they needed it on a budget. In the end, a desperate Google search yielded the MagicShine MJ-810B.

Then they had to actually drill the hole in the ice, which they did with an ice drill borrowed from a nearby village. Only one problem with that: it wasn't wide enough. "The diameter of the hole was too small to let our light come through," explains Rykov on his LiveJournal (translated by English Russia). "So we had to stop fishermen on the roadway and offer them 500 roubles for widening our hole with their special tool."

That led to an hour worth of cleaning up scratches left by the fishermen's spiked boots and clearing away the ice that had been dug up. Finally, after all of this, they were ready to lower the light and shoot. Here are some of the behind the scenes photos:

All of the work was well worth it. The images are going viral and the story is a testament to ingenuity, creativity and not giving up when your ice drill is too narrow (a problem I'm sure we'll all face at some point).

You can find out more about the project by either Google Translating the duo's Live Journal post or checking out the small bits that have been translated more accurately by English Russia here.

2014 Lexus GS - Specifications, Pictures, Prices - Leftlane News

Posted: 06 Dec 2011 01:22 PM PST

Now in its fourth generation, the Lexus GS mid-size luxury sedan can be had in two distinct forms: the hybrid GS 450h and the gas-powered GS 350. Both models are designed to be more stylish inside and out than their somewhat bland predecessors and the GS 350 ups the performance ante with an available driver-focused F Sport package.

Recent Changes
For the latest model year - the GS' second on the market - the sedan benefits from an efficient new eight-speed automatic transmission for rear-wheel-drive models. Other tweaks include a color display for the optional Heads-Up Display, the addition of Rear Cross Traffic Alert and power-folding mirrors to the available Blind Spot Monitoring package and an optional power trunk opener. The previously optional Lexus Night View system has been discontinued.

Overview
The GS sports Lexus' new corporate "spindle" grille that juts inward to emphasize the stylized "L" badge at its center. Underscored by hood detailing and pointed headlights, the grille is distinctive and visually signals that the GS is not just another staid Japanese luxury sedan. Elsewhere, some of the car's detailing is derivative - the LED accent lights were pioneered by Audi, while the side windows terminate in yet another interpretation of BMW's famous Hofmeister kink - but overall the look is far more likely to incite double-takes than the outgoing model.

Inside, the GS takes cues from both the LFA supercar and CT five-door hybrid with an elegant five-passenger cabin highlighted by an enormous (optional) 12.3-inch split screen navigation display. A three-spoke steering wheel and meaty side-view mirrors signal the car's sporting intentions, while elsewhere items like an understated analog clock and tasteful contrasting stitching help to create an air of refined, high-quality luxury. The dashboard contains relatively few buttons due to a mouse-like knob that handles audio and navigation adjustments. Many buyers find that the somewhat fiddly knob is a love-it-or-hate-it item, so shoppers are strongly encouraged to try before they buy.

The GS' interior is exceptionally quiet except when the accelerator pedal is thrust all the way to floor, at which point intake plumbing sends extra underhood music into the cabin.

Let's Talk Power
The GS 350 is powered by a carryover 3.5-liter V6 that uses direct injection to produces 306 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. The mill sends power to the rear wheels through a new eight-speed automatic gearbox that increases fuel economy to 19 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

An optional all-wheel-drive system makes the car all-weather capable but carries 200 pounds of extra weight, entails a less efficient six-speed automatic and ultimately reduces highway mileage 26 mpg. The system sends 30 percent of power to the front during normal circumstances, but slushy conditions can see a 50/50 split when needed.

The highlight of the GS 450h is its efficient hybrid powertrain. A detuned version of the aforementioned 3.5-liter V6 works with a pair of generators and a 240-cell nickel metal hydride battery to send a total of 338 horsepower to the rear wheels through a CVT. Even with the additional 400-pound mass of its hybrid system, the GS 450h is actually slightly quicker than the less powerful GS 350.

The GS 450h is rated at 29 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.

F Sport Package
The GS 350's optional F Sport Package ratchets up the performance factor with a host of technologies designed to improve handling. These are highlighted by the Lexus Dynamic Handling system with Dynamic Rear Steering, which monitors vehicle speed, steering direction and driver inputs in order to calculate the optimum steering angle for all four wheels. The system can independently manage both front and rear wheel steering angles to help improve turn-in response, rear grip, vehicle control and overall agility when cornering.

Lexus says that an Adaptive Suspension system included in the package helps front and rear wheel control and provides agile, sharp and confident driving behavior with a more direct response to the driver's actions.

Visual changes include more aggressive air intakes on the lower front fascia, a unique rear lower valence, a rear lip spoiler and F Sport mesh grille inserts. Special 19-inch wheels shod with meaty tires round out the upgrades included in the package.

Luxury Comes Standard
The GS comes standard with perforated-leather upholstery, genuine wood trim, 10-way power-adjustable front seats, a power sunroof, an eight-inch high-resolution multimedia display, a backup camera, a 12-speaker audio system, automatic dual zone climate control, cruise control, a USB audio device input, Bluetooth phone connectivity and audio streaming, HD radio with iTunes tagging, a backup camera and more.

Optional Features
For customers desirous of an extra dose of luxury, Lexus offers several GS option packages.

The Premium Package includes rain-sensing wipers, heated and ventilated front seats and power rear sunshade.

The Luxury Package includes Premium Package features plus Adaptive Variable Suspension, an Adaptive Front Lighting System, unique high gloss espresso wood ornamentation, semi-aniline leather, 18-way power front driver and passenger seats with articulated back, side bolster and thigh support controls, four-way lumbar, butterfly headrests, passenger seat memory, rear HVAC and audio controls, rear manual side sunshades, 18-inch alloy wheels and wood and leather-wrapped (or trimmed) steering wheel.

Besides the massive 12.3-inch screen, the optional navigation system allows access to Lexus's Enform Application Suite, which pairs with the owner's iPhone, Android or Blackberry to provide local searches through Bing and utilize voice-enabled apps to make restaurant reservations through OpenTable, get movie tickets via MovieTickets.com or tap into internet radio, including Pandora or iHeartRadio.

The system also provides ability to check-in on Facebook and search for various business reviews including restaurants on Yelp. SiriusXM data services offer information on stocks, traffic, weather, sports and fuel prices.

Audiophiles will appreciate the available 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium surround sound audio system. The system provides 7.1 channel surround-sound through 10 channels using a new class D Digital amplifier with a clean 835-watts from 20-20,000 hz at only 0.01 percent total harmonic distortion. Green Edge speakers, a Lexus first, are lighter, more energy-efficient and have less distortion than conventional units.

Occupant Safety
The GS is equipped with 10 airbags, including a knee airbag for both driver and front passenger. Outboard rear seats have seat-mounted side airbags, and all four outboard occupant seating positions are equipped with side curtain airbags.

New Whiplash Injury Lessening front seats reduce the space between the occupant's head and headrest to help limit excessive head movement and help decrease the severity of whiplash-type injuries in certain types of rear end collisions.

Available options to help further enhance occupant safety include a Pre-Collision System (PCS), which uses the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control System to provide early warning of upcoming objects that might result in a collision. The system also uses an infrared camera with new scanning technology to monitor the driver's eyes - in the event that the driver does not appear to be looking forward when a collision appears imminent, the system will initiate the warning at an earlier threshold. If the driver still does not respond and make the appropriate maneuver, the system will initiate braking intervention up to 1.2 seconds prior to impact to help lessen the severity of the collision.

Other optional safety systems include a Heads Up Display; a Blind Spot Monitor (packaged with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and power-folding mirrors) that helps detect vehicles in rear/side blind spots; and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW). LKA provides a small amount of active steering torque to help maintain course, while the LDW feature alerts the driver if the system detects that the vehicle is beginning to drift out of the lane.

Key Competitors
Some of the Lexus GS 350's main competitors include the luxurious but conservative Mercedes-Benz E-Class and the elegant and technology-laden Audi A6. Those its handling isn't as focused as that the of the outgoing model, the latest BMW 5-Series is still a strong choice and offers a class-exclusive manual transmission.

The GS 450h squares off against Infiniti M Hybrid and the BMW ActiveHybrid 5, which skew slightly more towards the performance edge of the spectrum. Those looking for decreased fuel costs but don't have to have a hybrid should consider the Mercedes-Benz E350 Bluetec, which features a torquey diesel engine that returns 33 mpg on the highway.

2014 Lexus LX - Specifications, Pictures, Prices - Leftlane News

Posted: 10 Oct 2013 09:18 PM PDT

The Lexus LX 570 is essentially a mildly restyled version of the Toyota Land Cruiser. That mean's it's an old-school, full-size SUV that can tow like a pickup and venture off the pavement to remote places where few other vehicles dare tread.

Though it can't match the space or handling refinement of some competitors, it's nevertheless plenty civilized in most driving situations while offering an even more coddling interior than the already opulent Land Cruiser.

Recent Changes
Lexus updated the LX 570 inside and out for the previous model year, adding freshened sheetmetal along with an upgraded interior. Following that overhaul, it essentially stands pat this year.

Overview
It's fair to say that they don't make them like the LX 570 any more. Most automakers have long since retired their trucklike, body-on-frame SUVs for car-based crossovers as buyers recognize they want improved fuel efficiency and handling more than towing ability and off-roading chops.

However, some folks still need those extreme capabilities, and want them in combination with big-time luxury. For them, the LX 570 is one of the best remaining choices.

With its rugged construction, electronically adjustable suspension and four-wheel-drive system with low-range gearing, the LX 570 is a true mountain goat on the trails. Its standard Crawl Control system can even automatically control the throttle and brakes to help maintain a steady pace on steep declines or while maneuvering over rough, uneven surfaces.

The LX 570 boasts a 5.7-liter V8 that pairs with a six-speed automatic and produces 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. That's enough output to muscle the big SUV over precipitous hills or tow up to 7,000 lbs. Fuel economy is about what one would expect: 13 in the city and 18 on the highway, a product of the LX 570's big motor and bigger mass.

Despite its rough and tough strengths, the LX 570 also delivers a comfortable daily driving experience due in large part to its adaptive dampers, which provide a smooth ride while also mitigating body roll.

With soft leather upholstery, handsome wood trim and excellent fit-and-finish, the cabin is an enjoyable place to spend time. Befitting the LX 570's price point, numerous desirable features are standard, with highlights including a navigation system, heated front seats, a sunroof and a power liftgate.

A standard touchscreen display integrates Lexus' Enform suite of apps, including Yelp, Pandora and iHeartRadio.

One downside to the interior is less space than one might expect given the SUV's size. Though the LX 570 technically has room for eight passengers, the third row is cramped and best left to children. Additionally, while cargo space is respectable - it measures 41 cubic feet behind the second row seats and 83 cubes with the second and third rows folded - some smaller models can match or better it. That's largely because the third-row seats power-fold to the sides of the interior, rather than folding flat into the floor.

Standard and Optional Features
The LX 570 is fitted as standard with leather upholstery, genuine wood trim, a navigation system, four-zone automatic climate control, a sunroof, a power-closing tailgate, heated front seats, a nine-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo with AUX and USB inputs, Bluetooth connectivity with streaming audio, auto on/off headlights, cruise control, full power accessories, power-adjustable first-, second- and third-row seats power-folding heated exterior mirrors, adaptive xenon headlights, LED taillights and 20-inch alloy wheels.

The optional Luxury Package brings a 19-speaker Mark Levinsom premium stereo, a cooled beverage box, semi-aniline leather-trimmed upholstery with new contrast stitching, a heated steering wheel, mahogany wood-trimmed door switch plates, a rear-center armrest cover, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats (outboard position only), a proximity key and a dual-screen rear-seat entertainment system.

Occupant Safety
All LX 570 models feature front, front side, front knee, second-row- side and full-length side-curtain airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems.

A pre-collision braking system is available as an option. Bundled with dynamic radar cruise control, it can recognize potential accidents and apply the brakes to reduce the severity of a collision.

Key Competitors
Those looking for a full-size luxury 'ute like the LX 570 with real off-roading abilities should also research the Range Rover, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and the Infiniti QX56. If on-road performance is more of a priority, the Mercedes-Benz GL-Class and Audi Q7 are good options in this segment.

Even though this year's Detroit and Geneva auto shows provided us with a number of big concept releases and production debuts, the New York Auto Show still remains one of North America's premier events. Gizmag was on the ground last week to investigate some of the show's more interesting debuts and North American reveals. Here's our first-hand look at some of the highlights and the key designs from the 2014 show.

The North American debut of the 1200 hp Swedish supercar was Koenigsegg's first foray back into the US since the recession. The US$1.6 million Agera R supercar was one of the more extreme and more impressive vehicles at the show. The carbon fiber-saturated car is powered by a handmade Koenigsegg 5 liter V8 bi-turbo that weighs only 197kg complete with flywheel, clutch, dry sump system and Inconel exhaust manifold. The car features superlight Aircore hollow carbon fiber wheels and a top speed of approximately 440 km/h (273mph). Koenigsegg reports the Agera R can throw down performance figures to the tune of 0-300 km/h (186 mph) in 14.53 seconds or brake from 300-0 km/h in only 6.66 sec.

One of the most anticipated of the North American releases was the Corvette Z06 coupe and convertible. Figures for the newer, faster 'Vette come in at 625 hp and 635 lb.ft of torque thanks to a supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V8 that sends power to the wheels via driver's choice of either a 7-speed manual gearbox or 8 speed autobox. Stylistically the car is even more aggressive thanks to a plethora of functional and aesthetic revisions that make it even more attractive than the standard Corvette in person.

One of the most anticipated and visually outstanding vehicles of the New York Auto Show has to be BMW's i8. The i8 is the first plug-in hybrid vehicle from BMW Group and is considered one of its most revolutionary vehicles, regardless of power delivery systems. On display next to its less attractive sibling, the i3, the Protonic Blue i8 features dihedral doors, floating wings that flow off the roofline, a streamlined cabin, sleek hood and flank treatments, and an overall styling presence that frankly makes the rest of the BMW line up look a little dated.

The i8 runs a tiny 1.5 liter 3-cylinder, twin-turbocharged engine that develops 231 hp and 236 lb.ft of torque. That power is sent to the rear wheels via a 6-speed automatic gearbox, whereas a synchronous electric motor, combined with a 2-stage automatic transmission, provides power to the front wheels to the tune of 131 hp and 184 lb.ft of torque. Overall, the i8 is a welcome view into the future of what large scale manufacturers can do with hybrid technology when the design guys and engineers get along.

Nissan Murano

Not quite in the same league as the Koenigsegg or the Corvette, Nissan's newly unveiled Murano is nonetheless an important new product for the manufacturer. Making its world debut at the NYC Auto Show the new Murano's styling is more dynamic than its predecessor, showing sculpting treatments similar to that of its stage mate – the Sport Sedan Concept. Under the hood the Murano receives power from Nissan's established 3.5 liter V-6 that's good for 260 horsepower and 240 lb.ft of torque. The now lighter Murano gets power to wheels via an Xtronic CVT transmission, while inside the crossover Nissan has done a decent job of tricking out the Murano with what it calls a "social lounge" interior treatment which delivers backseat occupants more leg room, USB ports and heated seats. The new Murano features a new instrument panel with 7 inch high-res Drive-Assist Display, plus the number of audio and navigation switches has been reduced from 25 to 10 for a more user-friendly experience.

These were just a few of the highlights from the show. Check out the full photo gallery for more of the highlights.

The 2014 New York Auto Show runs until April 27 at the Javits Center in Manhattan.
