Here are the first pictures of Lotus's new contender, the E22, which features a double-pronged nose.

Lotus issued the images via its Twitter account after McLaren revealed its MP4-29.

No further information was issued about the new car, which is expected to make its first track appearance at the second pre-season test at Bahrain on February 19th. It bears the logos of PDVSA, who back new driver Pastor Maldonado, and new sponsor Yotaphone.

Lotus releases first image of its 2014 Formula 1 car - F1 news ...

Lotus releases first image of new car

Lotus released an image of its 2014 Formula 1 car on Friday and unveiled a two-pronged solution to the new rules' controversial nose design.

Although Lotus has already announced that it will not run its new E22 until the second pre-season F1 test in Bahrain, it issued a computer-generated image of the new car via its Twitter feed.

The picture reveals that Lotus has split its nose section into two downward-sloping points.

Front end aesthetics have been a huge talking point in F1 over the winter, with the 2014 rules mandating lower front ends but a loophole allowing teams to meet this demand with very narrow protusions.

Lotus has taken an alternative route to McLaren and Williams, the other two teams to have shown the front end of their 2014 designs so far, both of which have gone for central 'finger' sections.

The Lotus image was released at the same time as McLaren held an online launch for its 2014 car.

Earlier on Friday Lotus announced that its team boss Eric Boullier had left, with the Frenchman now expected to head to McLaren.

Lotus will field Romain Grosjean and ex-Williams driver Pastor Maldonado this season, the Venezuelan replacing Ferrari-bound Kimi Raikkonen.

Mercedes W05: First pictures - F1 Fanatic

The Mercedes W05 has broken cover – here are the first pictures of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg's car for 2014.

Executive director of business Toto Wolff said car and its new V6 turbo engine was "the result of several years of intense effort".

"But we know that the adventure has only just begun. We have a busy winter testing period ahead of us and a long season where both performance and reliability will be critically important."

Paddy Lowe, the team's executive director of technical, said the new engines represent "the biggest change in packaging in Formula One for many years".

"There is a lot more equipment to cool: more hybrid systems plus the intercooler for the charge air from the turbocharger. That has both a packaging and an aerodynamic dimension."

"With the introduction of a turbocharger, managing the heat around the exhaust system is important for both car integrity and also for performance," he added. "If losses can be minimised in the primaries between the engine block and turbo, that is energy that can be recovered and used for car performance."

Weight is also a significant concern, as Lowe explained. "Although the minimum weight has been raised to 691kg, it is far more difficult to achieve than last year's target because of the extra equipment in the power unit and its associated systems, plus the cooling demand and the new, heavier side impact structures prescribed by the FIA."

Sauber C33: First pictures - F1 Fanatic

Sauber C33, 2014

Sauber have revealed the C33, their new car for the 2014 season.

Chief designer Eric Gandelin said the team have focused on developing a car which will permit them "maximum flexibility" under Formula One's new rules.

"The radical changes to the technical regulations for 2014 mean that it's even harder than usual to make predictions for the new season," said Gandelin.

"We know what kind of package we've put together here, and we are happy with what we achieved, but it is difficult to foresee what shape our rivals are in. The earliest opportunity to gain an impression of where the teams are in relation to one another will come during testing."

Gandelin added the team have made reliability a "high priority" when designing the new car as they expect many teams to have problems at the beginning of the season. The team intend to concentrate on reliability in the first test at Jerez next week before introducing performance upgrades for the two Bahrain tests.

"The car will be fully functional, but without a number of performance parts, which will be introduced for the two tests in Bahrain," said Gandelin.

"On the one hand this gives us time to maximise the development of these performance relevant parts, and on the other hand we can run the car during the first test and check all the systems, which we feel is crucial, considering all the technical changes."

Toro Rosso STR9: First pictures - F1 Fanatic

Daniil Kvyat, Jean-Eric Vergne, Toro Rosso STR9, Jerez, 2014

The Toro Rosso STR9 is the team's first car with Renault power. Here are pictures of their 2014 contender at its launch at Jerez.

Team principal Franz Tost said the team had made their earliest ever start on the new car: "In 2014 the key parameters for success will be finding the best balance between deploying the power of the engine and managing the 100kg fuel limit per race, the use of the two energy recovery systems and, just as in the past, the tyres.

"Apart from the new rules, at Toro Rosso we have also had to adapt to a new engine partner and we are looking forward to working with Renault. One final new element for us is on the driver side, as Daniil Kvyat joins us to race alongside Jean-Eric Vergne. Both are very talented and we expect good things from them.

"With all these changes, some that affect everyone, others that are specific to Toro Rosso, it is really difficult to set targets or make predictions. However, it is clear we have to improve our performance and make a step forward."

Ferrari F14 T

The Ferrari F14 T has been revealed for the first time by the team. Ferrari hope to win their first world championship in six years with their 2014 contender.

Ferrari have retained pull-rod suspension front and rear on the car, but the F14 T is otherwise very different from its predecessor, largely due to the changes in the technical rules for 2014.

The name for the new car was chosen by a public vote of over one million Ferrari fans.
