Schumacher's first cars & recent racers at Goodwood - F1 Fanatic Posted: 28 Jun 2014 04:05 AM PDT The first five Formula One cars raced by Michael Schumacher feature among the most recent grand prix machinery present at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Schumacher began his F1 career with a single race in the attractive Jordan 191 at Spa-Francorchamps. Despite retiring on the first lap with clutch failure, he showed so much promise in qualifying he was immediately signed up by Benetton team principal Flavio Briatore – to the deep chagrin of Eddie Jordan. The next four cars Schumacher drove were Benetton. He won one race each in the B192 and B193, then claimed the first of his record seven world championship victories in the blue-and-green B194 in 1994. He beat Damon Hill to that title but two years later the Williams driver clinched the title in the Renault-engined FW18, which is also running at Goodwood this weekend. Although current Formula One cars cannot run at the event due to testing restrictions, several teams are running their 2011 chassis, mostly with their latest liveries.

Early F1 cars at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed - F1 Fanatic Posted: 27 Jun 2014 09:54 AM PDT F1 picturesMercedes dominated the mid-fifites in the world championship much as they are doing today with their W196 in open-wheel and streamliner form. Examples of each are in action at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Other early championship-winning cars running at the Festival include two Ferraris: a replica of the 156 which Phil Hill took to the 1961 title and John Surtees' 1964 championship-winning 158. Some less successful F1 machines are also present: BRM's 16-cylinder P15 sounded spectacular but was outclassed on the track. Unusual and obscure F1 cars often reappear at Goodwood and the Derrington-Francis cars based on an ATS chassis is an example: it only raced once.

Senna's racers among 80s F1 cars at Goodwood - F1 Fanatic Posted: 28 Jun 2014 03:11 AM PDT Formula One cars from the 1980s at the Goodwood Festival of Speed include several machines which were famously associated with Ayrton Senna. They include cars of the type he won his first championship and scored his first podium with – and another non-F1 car which Senna made a big impression in during his first F1 season. A McLaren-Honda MP4/4 of the type Senna took his first title with is present in the full original livery as used by the team in 1988. Senna won seven times in the car. Four years earlier Senna campaigned the Toleman-Hart TG184 for much of the season, scoring a remarkable second-place in that year's rain-shortened Monaco Grand Prix. Also that year Senna was invited to participate in a race to mark the opening of the new, shortened Nurburgring. Mercedes supplied a fleet of identical 190E saloon cars for several world champions and top drivers, as well as the then-rookie Senna. The young driver stunned his rivals by winning the race, giving further signal that this was a talent to keep a close eye on in the future. That year's championship was won in dominant fashion by McLaren. Although they would raise the bar to a new high just a few year's later, the TAG-Porsche powered MP4/2′s record of 12 wins from 16 starts was one of the crushing seasons seen for many years at the time. It took Niki Lauda to his third and final world championship title by the narrowest-ever margin of half a point over Alain Prost.
